Architecture rather than furniture styles are the strongest influences for John Schwartzkopf. Ideas for his work may also come from interesting shapes found in everyday observations. “I draw inspiration from all sorts of places--but mostly good designs, regardless of what that product may be--bridge, building, or butter dish,” he explains. Schwartzkopf, like many artists, remembers drawing and building things as a child. He first built furniture from his own designs in high school. While he took a number of art courses, in woodworking he remains self-taught. Though lacking formal design training, Schwartzkopf, nevertheless, developed from hobbyist to artisan. He defines his artistic process by stating, “My work grows out of my love for the materials . . . I take a somewhat sculptural approach to design, balancing proportion and form to the unique qualities of the materials to be used in that particular piece.”
